Building Focus, Confidence, and Opportunity in Waterbury Schools
How Bee-Conomy is helping students strengthen the skills they need to succeed.
When children are engaged, supported, and excited to learn, incredible things happen.
This year, The Bee-Conomy partnered with Waterbury's Community Schools initiative as part of the BOOST! expanded learning program, bringing game-based learning experiences focused on leadership, literacy, creativity, and social-emotional growth to students across the district. The results demonstrate the power of creating learning environments where curiosity and engagement come first.
According to the Waterbury Public Schools Bridge to Success Community Schools End-of-Year Report, students participating in Bee-Conomy programming showed measurable growth in focus and attention. One of the most notable outcomes revealed that 87% of participating students reported they could read or look at a book for at least five minutes after participating in the program, compared to 74% before the program began.
While reading for five minutes may seem simple, for many young learners it represents an important building block toward stronger concentration, classroom engagement, and academic success.
The Bee-Conomy's approach combines storytelling, collaboration, creativity, and hands-on learning experiences that encourage children to actively participate rather than passively receive information. Through interactive activities rooted in the Seven C's—Curiosity, Compassion, Communication, Connection, Cooperation, Collaboration, and Community—students are invited to explore, create, and grow together.
The Bee-Conomy was one of several enrichment programs contributing to Waterbury's expanded learning opportunities initiative, which reached hundreds of students through before-school, during-school, and after-school programming. The report also highlighted that students participating in enrichment programs attended school at higher rates than their peers, reinforcing the importance of engaging learning experiences that make students excited to show up and participate.
For us, the numbers tell only part of the story.
Behind every percentage is a child who discovered a new interest, found confidence in their abilities, learned to work with others, or experienced the joy of being part of a supportive learning community.
As Bee-Conomy continues to grow, we remain committed to creating meaningful experiences that help children build the skills, habits, and confidence they need to thrive—not only in school, but throughout life.
